About fillings

When decay is caught early, a filling is all a tooth needs. We remove the decayed part gently, then rebuild the tooth with tooth-coloured composite that bonds to the enamel and is matched to your shade.

Small cavities rarely hurt, which is why regular check-ups matter. Left alone, decay spreads towards the nerve — and a simple filling becomes a root canal.

This may be suitable if you have

  • A cavity found at a check-up
  • Food catching between two teeth
  • A small chip or crack
  • Old silver fillings you would like replaced

What we offer

Filling materials

  • Tooth-coloured composite
  • Glass ionomer for children and roots
  • Ceramic inlays for larger cavities
  • Temporary fillings in emergencies

Comfort

  • Numbing gel before any injection
  • Gentle, slow anaesthetic
  • Rubber dam to keep the tooth dry
  • Most fillings done in one visit

After your filling

  • Bite checked and polished
  • Eat once the numbness wears off
  • Advice to reduce new decay
  • Review at your next check-up

How treatment works

  1. Find it

A close look and a digital X-ray show how deep the decay goes.

  2. Clean it

The tooth is numbed and the decay removed, keeping as much healthy tooth as possible.

  3. Rebuild it

Tooth-coloured composite is built up in layers, set with a curing light and polished to match.

Frequently asked questions

Do tooth-coloured fillings last?

Modern composite fillings commonly last seven to ten years or more with good care. Very large cavities may do better with an inlay or onlay.

Should I replace my old silver fillings?

Only if they are cracked, leaking or decayed underneath, or you want the look improved. Sound amalgam fillings don't need to be removed.

Can I eat after a filling?

Composite sets hard straight away, so you can eat once the numbness has worn off — usually within two to three hours.
