About inlays & onlays

An inlay fits inside the grooves of a back tooth; an onlay also covers one or more of its chewing cusps. Both are made outside the mouth — in our in-house laboratory — from strong ceramic or composite, then bonded into place.

Because they are made to measure, inlays and onlays fit more precisely and wear better than a large filling, while saving far more natural tooth than a full crown.

This may be suitable if you have

  • A large or failing old filling
  • A cracked cusp on a back tooth
  • Decay too large for a simple filling
  • You want to keep more natural tooth than a crown allows

How treatment works

  1. Prepare and scan

The old filling and decay are removed, the tooth is shaped and scanned, and a temporary placed.

  2. Craft in the lab

Our technicians make the inlay or onlay to your scan and shade, usually within three days.

  3. Bond in place

The restoration is tried in, checked for fit and bite, then bonded permanently.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an inlay and an onlay?

An inlay sits within the cusps of a tooth, like a filling. An onlay covers one or more cusps too, which protects a weakened tooth from cracking.

Why not just have a crown?

A crown needs the tooth shaped down on all sides. An onlay keeps the healthy walls of the tooth, which is better for the tooth in the long term.

Is it painful?

The tooth is numbed for the first visit, much like a filling. The second visit is usually comfortable without anaesthetic.
