About oral surgery

Sometimes a tooth can't be saved, or a wisdom tooth has no room to come through and keeps getting infected. Our oral and maxillofacial surgeon removes teeth as gently as possible, often without stitches, under thorough local anaesthetic.

Impacted wisdom teeth are planned on an X-ray or 3D scan first, so we can see the roots and the nerve before we begin. If you are nervous, conscious sedation can help you stay relaxed throughout.

This may be suitable if you have

  • A painful or repeatedly swollen wisdom tooth
  • A tooth too broken or decayed to save
  • Teeth to be removed before braces or dentures
  • A cyst, lump or sore that needs a biopsy

How treatment works

  1. Assess

An X-ray or 3D scan shows the root shape and position before anything is decided.

  2. Treat

Under local anaesthetic, with sedation if you wish, the tooth is removed as gently as possible.

  3. Recover

You go home with clear instructions; most people are back to normal within two to three days.

Frequently asked questions

Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?

No. We only recommend removal if a wisdom tooth is causing pain, infection, decay or damage to the tooth next to it.

How painful is recovery?

Expect some swelling and soreness for two to three days, which ordinary painkillers and cold compresses manage well.

What should I eat afterwards?

Soft, cool food for the first day — curd rice, idli, soup that is not too hot. Avoid smoking and drinking through a straw, which can disturb healing.
