About sedation dentistry

If fear of the dentist has kept you away, you are not alone — and you don't have to grit your teeth through treatment. Conscious sedation helps you feel calm and drowsy while staying able to respond, and many patients remember little of the appointment afterwards.

Sedation is given and monitored by our oral surgeon, with your oxygen level and pulse checked throughout. It is also useful for long procedures such as wisdom tooth removal, implants or full mouth treatment.

This may be suitable if you have

  • Dental anxiety or a bad past experience
  • A strong gag reflex
  • Long or complex treatment
  • Difficulty getting numb with local anaesthetic

What we offer

How treatment works

  1. Talk first

We discuss your worries, review your health and agree which sedation suits you.

  2. Relax and treat

The sedation takes effect within minutes, then treatment begins while you are monitored.

  3. Rest and go home

You rest until steady; after oral sedation, an adult should take you home.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be asleep?

No. Conscious sedation leaves you relaxed and drowsy but able to respond. For treatment under general anaesthesia we refer you to a hospital.

Can I drive afterwards?

After inhaled sedation, usually yes, once the gas has cleared. After oral sedation you must not drive for the rest of the day, so please bring an adult with you.

Is sedation suitable for children?

Inhaled sedation can help some anxious children. Our children's dentist will advise whether it is right for your child.
